High risk pregnancy
HIGH RISK PREGNANCY
A high-risk pregnancy refers to a pregnancy where there is an increased chance of complications for the mother, the baby, or both. Factors that can contribute to a pregnancy being classified as high risk include:
1. Maternal age: Being under 17 or over 35 years old increases the risk of certain complications.
2. Medical conditions: Pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases, and certain infections can complicate pregnancy.
3. Previous pregnancy complications: Women who have experienced complications in previous pregnancies, such as preterm birth, preeclampsia, or miscarriage, may be considered at higher risk in subsequent pregnancies.
4. Multiple pregnancies: Carrying twins, triplets, or more increases the risk of complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and preeclampsia.
5. Lifestyle factors: Smoking, drug use, alcohol consumption, and obesity can all increase the risk of complications during pregnancy.
6. Genetic factors: Certain genetic conditions or a family history of genetic disorders can increase the risk of complications for both the mother and the baby.
7. Placental abnormalities: Conditions such as placenta previa or placental abruption can increase the risk of bleeding and other complications during pregnancy.
Having a high-risk pregnancy doesn’t necessarily mean that complications will occur, but it often requires closer monitoring and sometimes specialized care to ensure the best possible outcome for both the mother and the baby. Women with high-risk pregnancies may be referred to a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, who specializes in managing complex pregnancies.
